Above and Below
Above and Below was a site-specific project that took place in and around Norwich Cathedral. My response to this medieval site evolved into two pieces of work: the first being a live piece that took place in the cloisters of Norwich Cathedral. I walked in reverse around the enclosure, pausing from time to time to make audio recordings of myself describing the journey and my contemplations on the experience. These recordings were then played back at further stages along the walk.
The second piece was an installation in the Cathedral Library: a book written by myself was placed on a small desk underneath a window that overlooks the Cloisters. The book lay open in front of an upright mirror and there was a single chair inviting the viewer to sit and read. The title of the work was on the centre pages of the book instead of its cover, and the book lay open at this position. One half of the text (Above) had been written in reverse and was only truly legible in the reflective surface of the mirror. The text described an impossible external climb of the Cathedral, while the second text (Below) described an exploration of the building at ground level with some interesting encounters.
