Artist Statement
My work deals with notions of deceit, pretence and contradiction, often set within a historical context. I view history as a fragile and vulnerable concept open to corrupt and subversive forces, and in a playful way much of my work responds to these ideas. A sense of narrative and storytelling is very important to me: I work across disciplines often combining readymade objects with audio and text, I have also used CCTV technology, performance, and devised olfactory installations. Audio is a key component of my practice; I have a musical background which is where my interest in sound began. I am also a writer, I began writing fiction as an art student and soon realised that this was just as important to me as conveying my ideas visually. As time progressed I began to draw together these two areas. What emerged was a symbiotic relationship between my art work and my writing, although today, my writing has developed a life of its own.
